Territorial

Social Justice, Housing & Constitutional State

Round 2 laws are revealed after the players finish round 1

“It was quite impressive the way you developped the housing project. It was exciting to play the game and to see how people developed from enemies to get as much space as possible to people ready to negotiate to get the best result all together. It was with great pleasure to see the way you devided the different tasks and to see that you all enjoyed it”

Game rounds results hung for discussion

How can community building help fight social injustice regarding housing? Is there enough power and strength in communities to help the lack of housing?

Cooperation is the key to just housing distribution. By setting basic laws and timing, we test the capability of community formation and cooperation in an interactive experimental game.

The first round of the game is played in a rush (1 minute), where everyone has to claim their space. Afterwards, we give participants a new set of rules for round two where they have to consider the choices they made, collectively, and make decisions by re-dividing the space.

Each divided space -realized through the marker lines on the plastic sheet- is hung on the wall, not only for participants but for everyone to reflect on, because in reality, we are all playing this game.

“ When you told me you were planning to make a game I was very excited. I believe that Interactive (Media) Design is about creating understanding and empathy by provoking interaction. Not as one way communication where the artists tells and the visitor (or spectator) listens. But as a continuous conversation between the artist and the participant or participants. A game is in my opinion one of the strongest interactive mediums to do so.

However it is not easy to create interaction. As you have to predict behaviour that creates the desired understanding of the message you want to tell. I think you’ve successfully created a game that tells a story through interaction. Great job!

Thank you all for this unique opportunity to collaborate with two parties that usually don't work together (KABK and Haagsche Schouw).”
